Flying Fisherman President, Pat Sheldon, Receives Telly Awards

DRAMBUIE KEY WEST MARLIN
TOURNAMENT TV SHOW WINS AWARDS

MARATHON, Florida Keys — A Florida Keys-produced television show, focusing on one of the area’s premiere angling competitions, has garnered two coveted broadcasting awards. “Drambuie On Ice-Key West Blue Marlin Challenge” was named a winner in the 2002 Telly Awards cultural division and a finalist in the entertainment category, earning two silver statuettes for Islamorada-based Sheldon/Young Television Productions.

The half-hour production has aired on the Florida Sunshine Network, the Outdoor Life Network and Direct TV.

It was among 11,114 entries in the 23rd annual national competition.

Primarily shot during the 2001 Drambuie Key West Blue Marlin Tournament, the show opens with an overview on each of five Keys regions.

Utilizing state-of-the-art digital video technology, an innovative, five-minute “dream” sequence recreates the catch-and-release of the competition’s winning 375-pound blue marlin by 15-year-old Key West student Clay Harris.

“The section of the show highlighting Clay’s winning fish was phenomenal, “ said Joesph Delaney, the U.S. agent for Drambuie, who was presented with duplicates of the awards during a special ceremony at Hawk’s Cay Resort Saturday, May 18. “To be able to accurately recreate the sequence of events, with all visual and audio nuances, is testament to the creativeness and expertise of Pat (Sheldon) and Joe (Young).”

The Monroe County Tourist Development Council and Visit Florida, promotional agencies for the Keys and the state of Florida respectively, provided primary funding for the production.

Founded in 1980, the Telly Awards recognize cable broadcast television productions and commercials. Past Telly recipients include Sony Pictures, Walt Disney Studios, Microsoft, MSNBC and Time-Life Video.

Nick Carter, a Marathon resident and one of the original members of the Backstreet Boys pop music group, took a break from the weekend’s American Power Boat Association Marathon Offshore Grand Prix, to attend the ceremony and present Tellys to Delaney and Drambuie marketing executive Caroline Sutcliffe.
